Bloggers Who Give Great Blogging Advice
It is amazing to me how quickly blogging/content creation has become not only a viable source of income, but a lucrative industry. We’re talking within a decade! Although I have been blogging for approximately that amount of time, I have not given 100% to it. That is not to say that I have not invested significant time, energy and money into it over the past several years. The Good Lord know I have! However, I would be lying if I said that I fully committed to making a serious career out of it. As much as I have dreamt of being paid to create visual and written content, I used my flight attendant job as a crutch - since I had that income to lean on, I held back from really giving blogging a serious go.
Now that I have left the job, I no longer have that excuse but I still haven’t taken certain steps to monetize my blog. The deep seated fear has just taken shape in other excuses, for example: “ I don’t have enough followers” and "I need to have a YouTube Channel”. I’m working on relinquishing that fear and something that helps is reading about the journey other women of colour have had in the field. Ultimately, I have to take the plunge but learning from others who have created spaces for themselves out of hard work, authenticity, discipline and tenacity encourages me to believe in myself.
Below are a few bloggers that I have been turning to for excellent, insightful advice on the unique career. These ladies stand out to me because of their generousity in sharing what they have learned. It’s refreshing to see women of colour helping their sisters succeed in the blogging arena.
Fashion Steele NYC
Monroe, the bo$$ babe behind Fashion Steele NYC, is one of the OG’s in the blogging world. As a result of observing her online presence over the years, it is plain to see that she has reached her current level through consistency, focus and a willingness to adapt to the ever changing social media landscape.
Having transitioned from a career as a doctor of physical therapy to being a full time content creator, Monroe’s journey continues to inspire me. Beyond her fabulous outfit posts and engaging videos, my favourite posts of hers are the ones in which she divulges gems about navigating the still new profession. Three such posts are: Tips For Being A Successful Entrepreneur , 6 Tips For Starting A Profitable Blog In 2021 and 3 Tips For Making The Money You Want From A Quarter Millionaire.
In addition to the plethora of knowledge she shares for free on her blog, Monroe has created a course for those interested in going deeper into what having a lucrative blogging career entails. I intend to take this course in a few months.
Mattie James
This Atlanta based blogger has established herself as not only one of the best in the “A”, but one of the best in the U.S. The photos of Mattie’s beautiful family and home bring feel good vibes virtually. In addition to presenting relatable images, I think another one of her skills is guiding others through the blogging/content creation industry. After watching a few of her very thorough IG Live videos concerning content creation, I read more of her suggestions on her blog.
I appreciate how Mattie emphasizes that a person need not have a gazillion followers on Instagram to leverage for brand partnerships and that popularity does not necessarily equate to being paid. Three of my favourite blogging related posts that she has written are Daily, Weekly & Monthly Tasks For Influencers, How To Make A Living Being Yourself and How To Write An Influencer Business Plan.
I have signed up for her class about How To Pitch Brands and I am so excited about what she is going to teach this Thursday.
Emma’s Edition
Her megawatt smile is what initially caught my attention on Pinterest. Once I went to her blog, I was thrilled to find out that that not only was that sunny disposition evident throughout her posts, but that she prioritized letting others in on the things she has learned so far as a social media influencer. Some of her posts that I have found informative are What Brands Look For In Content Creators & Influencers, 9 Things You Can Pitch To Brands As A Microinfluencer and 4 Reasons We Fail To Meet Our Goals As Content Creators. The fact that she is a micro influencer earning a six figure income from the career inspires me tremendously.
Emma also provides courses focused on the business of blogging. Given the clarity and guidance she shares in her blog posts and podcast, I feel comfortable going a step further by taking her courses. Another incentive is that her prices are quite affordable :)
Seeing these female bloggers excel reminds me that as long as I overcome the fear and execute certain steps I can as well. If , like me, you are interested in making a career out of blogging, I highly recommend catching up with these ladies’ posts.
